After a successful double header in Round 15, winning both games, the Werribee Devils Youth League Women (3rd, 12-5) suited up for another weekend of back-to-back contests in Round 16. First up, they faced second-placed Altona Gators (13-4).

The game got off to a quick start. Teaghan Doyle kicked things off with a couple of free throws for the Devils and was immediately answered by six Gator points inside the first two minutes. The Devils then took control of the contest, launching a 17-3 blitz and opening up a commanding lead, with Eliza Herne (nine points, two assists, five rebounds), Alex Moss (five points, two rebounds) and Natasha Currao (three points) the main contributors. The Gators were not going to be pushed around, and came back with a 7-2 run in the last minute of the quarter, to get within five points at the break. Taylah Lea also grabbed three rebounds.

The start of the second term was in stark contrast to the first, with neither side scoring in the opening two minutes. Doyle (three points, two assists) and Moss (four points, two rebounds) chipped in for the Devils, and the lead was back out to double digits. The two teams traded blows for the rest of the quarter, with the Devils able to maintain control. The Gators crept within five points late in the quarter but Currao (three points) and Herne (three points, two rebounds) kept the Devils in front. In a mirror image of the first quarter, the Gators scored 7-2 in the last minute and when the half time buzzer sounded, the quarter had been levelled and the Devils advantage was the same as it was at quarter time.

Herne, Lea and Doyle all scored early on for the Devils, as they continued to be in control of the match. However, after Doyle scored to give the Devils an eight point lead they only scored one more basket for the quarter, from Rachel Miller, while the Gators took over, piling on 13 points and taking the lead at three-quarter time. Moss dominated the boards, grabbing six for the quarter.

The Devils shooting deserted them in the last quarter, with their only scores in the first five minutes being free throws from Steph Pyke and Herne (six points, two rebounds). Fortunately for them, Altona only added six points during this time, so by the time Herne scored their first field goal with 4.35 remaining, they weren’t too far behind. Another field goal from Herne brought the Devils within three points and it was game on! The Gators went on a 6-2 run, giving them some breathing space, and Gould’s basket with 1.38 remaining was the final field goal of the game. The two teams traded free throws for the last 90 seconds and despite the efforts of Currao scoring four free throws in 30 seconds, the Devils were unable to make up any ground on the scoreboard, eventually going down 54-61

Natasha Currao - 9 points, 3 rebounds
Teaghan Doyle - 7 points, 6 rebounds
Tegan Hindle - 5 rebounds, 2 steals
Taylah Lea - 5 rebounds, 4 assists

After their disappointing loss the night before, the Werribee Devils Youth League Women (3rd, 12-5) backed up on Sunday against fellow finals contenders the Coburg Giants (4th, 9-7).

The Devils opened up an early lead through baskets to Taylah Lea, Charlotte Vincent-Lord and Rachel Miller. The Giants soon got on top and finished the opening term with a 17-3 run, to take a nine point lead into quarter time. Vincent-Lord led the Devils scorers with four points, and
Herne, Miller and Lea had two points each. Vincent-Lord also had four rebounds and two assists, while Herne grabbed three rebounds.
The Devils could only manage free throws in the first six minutes of the second quarter, with Vincent-Lord, Doyle and Currao (five points) all successful from the charity stripe. As happened the previous night against Altona, when the Devils encountered a scoring drought their opposition failed to take advantage, so when Currao finally hit the Devils first field goal with four minutes to play, the Devils were still in the game. Miller and Herne (three points, four rebounds) added to the Devils total and when Jenna Thomas nailed a free throw the Devils were only four points in arrears close to half time. Lauren Tipper (three points, two rebounds) was fouled as she scored, and converted the free throw and when Tegan Hindle also hit a free throw the margin was just two points. A three-pointer from Dalmau in the final seconds gave the Giants a five point half time lead.

Doyle scored the first basket of the second half, and was immediately answered for the Giants by Hoogenhout. Five unanswered Giants points increased their advantage and then Herne and Macbegor spent a couple of minutes engaged in their own little shootout, with Herne scoring seven points and Macbegor scoring four. The Devils seemed to get their scoring mojo back, and when Hindle added another bucket and Vincent-Lord and Currao (four points) knocked down three-pointers, scores were level at 48-48 and the Devils had the momentum with three minutes to play. However, MacAodha and Balbasis scored for the Giants in what turned out to be the only additions to the scoreboard in the final three minutes, and the Devils trailed by five at the final break. Hindle and Herne grabbed three rebounds each, while Lea had two rebounds and two assists

Macbegor and Efstathiadis opened the scoring for the Giants in the final term, and from there the Devils were always playing catch-up. Vincent-Lord (two points, two blocks) and Herne (three points, two rebounds) finally got on the board for the Devils after a couple of minutes, and then the visitors hit a purple patch in the middle of the quarter. Facing a double-digit deficit, Moss, Doyle (two points, two rebounds) and Herne led the fightback, and with three minutes remaining the Devils were within four points. However, six unanswered Giants points got the margin back out to double figures and the game was out of the Devils reach. Thomas scored right at the end for the Devils, making it an eight-point game, 68-60.
