In Round 6, the Werribee Devils Youth League Men (3rd, 5-2) travelled to Sunbury to take on the Jets (6th, 3-3).

The game started slowly as both teams, perhaps not accustomed to playing at 10am on a Sunday morning, took time to find their shooting range. Josh Zamperoni opened the scoring for the Devils in the first seconds of the match and it was another three minutes before either team would score, with Kyle Collins replying for the Jets. Travis Dale and Mitch Alush added to the Devils total, giving them a four point lead halfway through the quarter. The score remained 6-4 until, with 3.37 remaining, the shackles seemed to come off both teams and they started hitting shots. A three-pointer from Dylan Harberger pushed the Devils lead out to 7, but seven consecutive points from Jackson Flisher brought the Jets level with a minute to play. Zamperoni and Jarrod Bulluss traded baskets and at quarter-time the teams were all tied up at 15-15. Zamperoni and Dale led the Devils scorers with four points each, while they had several contributors on the boards with Dale, TJ Remy and Kodi Opetaia all featuring.

Without being there to witness it, it’s hard to know what to make of the second quarter. While a cursory glance at the box score says in black and white that the Devils blew the game wide open by outscoring the Jets 38-20, including 7-9 three-pointers, looking at the play-by-play in detail suggests it’s not that simple.

Mitch Alush scored first for the Devils, but two three-pointers in a row from J Bulluss gave the Jets an early lead. Five consecutive points from Bubby Luxford swung the game back the Devils way, but when Aaron Lemon hit a few in a row for the Jets, the margin was just five points halfway through the quarter. This is when the Devils started to get the edge. Two baskets to Cam Hutton and a Travis Dale long bomb without a Jets reply took the margin out to 13. Two baskets in a row to Lemon brought the Jets deficit back to single-figures but Dale quickly replied with another three-pointer. Put simply, the Jets didn’t have a bad quarter, but faced a constant shooting barrage up the other end which they were unable to stop. Three-pointers to Zamperoni and Alush in the final minute pushed the half time margin out to 18 in favour of the Devils. Scoring contributions came from everywhere for the Devils, including Hutton (9), Luxford (7), Remy (6), Dale (6), Zamperoni (5) and Alush (5). Alush had a big quarter, adding two rebounds, three blocks and two assists

Alush seemingly took over the game in the early stages of the third quarter, scoring the Devils first ten points in the space of four minutes. When TJ Remy decided to join in the action with 5.31 remaining, the Devils lead was out to a game-high 24 points. To the Jets credit they did not roll over, with Luke Collins “doing a Mitch” and scoring 11 points in the final 4.39 of the quarter. For all their hard work, the tip-in on the buzzer only brought them two points closer to the Devils. Apart from Alush, the other main contributor for the Devils was Dylan Harberger with five points for the quarter.

While Alush was a major thorn in the Jet’s side in the third quarter, this time around it was TJ Remy’s turn. Remy stepped up for 11 points, including three from long range, to help keep the Jets at a safe distance. The home side scored twice in the first 30 seconds, and all of a sudden the margin was only 12 points. The two teams went goal-for-goal in the first three minutes, before the Jets finally scored twice without a Devils reply. Every time the Jets made a charge, the Devils had the answers. Diquan Williams scored twice in a row for the Jets, but once again they were sandwiched in between Remy three-pointers. Then five points in a row from Lemon got the Jets within 10 points but that was as close as they got. Kodi Opetaia added six points and two rebounds for the Devils, while Bubby Luxford had three rebounds and three assists to go with three free-throws toward the end which helped put the game out of reach of the Jets.

In Round 7 the Devils (3rd, 6-2) have a double header. They will be playing away to the Geelong Supercats (10th, 4-6) on Saturday night, then back at home on Sunday against the Hume City Broncos (9th, 3-4). It will be their first clash with Hume City for the season and they faced Geelong back in Round 1, which resulted in an 83-61 victory to the Devils.
