The Werribee Devils Youth League Men continued their excellent early-season form with a convincing 100-79 victory over the Keysborough Cougars. This game really showcased the depth of this talented team, in that even when a couple of their stars have quieter-than-normal games, there are plenty of others willing and able to step up and fill the breach.

The Devils were caught napping in the opening minutes, with the visitors jumping to a 14-6 lead thanks to Tom Stiglich (8) and Damien Pace (6). Gradually the Devils warmed up and finished with a 14-2 run to end the quarter, taking a six point lead to the first break. Josh Tang was the go-to-guy with nine points, while Mitch Alush had four points and three steals.

In the second quarter, defence went out the window and it was just wall-to-wall scoring as the Devils poured in 40 points and the Cougars scored 23 themselves in an entertaining ten-minute shoot-out. With under four minutes to go, the Cougars were within eight points, but a subsequent 12-0 Devils run blew the margin beyond 20 at the main break. Jesse Harberger had a big quarter with nine points, including a three-pointer on the half-time buzzer; Cam Hutton chipped in with eight, Tang shot a couple of treys, while Josh Zamperoni and Bubby Luxford added five each. Zamperoni and Harberger were big on the boards, with four each for the quarter.

The third term started slowly, as the Devils gradually built on their half time lead. With 4.38 remaining the Devils were up 9-4 for the quarter. However, once again the shackles came off and in the last four minutes the Devils nailed 17 points and the Cougars scored 15, giving the home side a 30-point lead at the break, 88-58. The two Joshes led the way for the Devils: Zamperoni scored a couple of threes and Tang had five points. In his first game for the season, big man Mangar Manyang had four points and five rebounds for the quarter.

The Devils eased off toward the end of the game, and in the final three minutes the Cougars scored nine of the last ten points to finish 21 points behind, 100-79. Tang was the Devils leading scorer for the quarter with three points, while Hutton pulled down four rebounds.

After their win at home against Keysborough, the Werribee Devils Youth League Men travelled to Coburg to take on the Giants.

The home side struck first through Ovie Magbegor, then Travis Dale, who had nine points in a big first quarter, hit back with a three. The scoring was regular and both teams combined for 61 points. Werribee was on top and gradually built a double digit lead. When a Josh Tang three-pointer made the lead 14 with 1.41 remaining, things were looking dangerous for the Giants. However, they weren’t done, and a Sean Ross jump shot in the final seconds brought the margin back to nine at the first break. As well as Dale, Jesse Harberger started with nine points and four rebounds, and Tang chipped in with seven. Bubby Luxford had two assists and two steals to go with four points.

Josh Zamperoni started the Devils off well after the break with a three-pointer, and for the next few minutes the margin hovered around double figures. Five unanswered points from the Giants late in the quarter brought the margin back to six, but the Devils steadied through baskets from Tang, Mangar Manyang and free throws to Luxford, to take a 10-point lead into the main break. Zamperoni led the Devils with five points for the quarter, while Manyang had four points and four rebounds. Cam Hutton and Luxford were also prominent on the glass, grabbing four rebounds each.

No matter what the Giants did, the Devils seemed to always be that one step ahead. The home side once again crept within six points early in the quarter but were immediately answered by a TJ Remy three-pointer. The teams traded blows throughout the quarter, with the Giants initially not making much headway on the scoreboard until the Devils hit a quiet patch and the Giants found themselves within four, 60-64. Once again Remy answered with a three pointer, then Hutton added five points in quick succession to give the visitors some breathing space. When Liam Paul hit one from downtown with 20 seconds to go, the margin was back out to 14, but was pegged back by a Jack Jeavons basket in the final four seconds. Remy had nine points for the Devils while Hutton and Harberger back him up with five points each. Manyang was doing his job as the big man, grabbing five rebounds.

Armed with a 12-point lead, the Devils would have been careful to avoid a repeat of the previous night’s final quarter where they were outscored 21-12. Harberger, who had a huge last quarter with 11 points and 5 rebounds, kickstarted the Devils with the first basket, and the Devils maintained their double digit lead throughout the quarter, running away with a 21 point victory. Remy added 5 points and three rebounds, while Mitch Alush featured with four assists and two rebounds to go with four points.

The two wins place the Devils at the top of the Youth League Men ladder ahead of Whittlesea on percentage, and Altona has now dropped to third. Speaking of Whittlesea, they just happen to be the Devils Round 5 opponents. The top-of-the-table clash will take place on Sunday, 1.00pm at Eagle Stadium.
